WYDIWYG (what you draw is what you get): 3D modeling system based on 2D drawing

Designers draw hundreds of sketches to seek a pleasing 3D form. However, depicting a 3D form accurately in a 2D plane, which is called perspective drawing, is not easy. Not only is it a hassle to draw many strict guide lines, but it is also challenging to replicate the same form at other view points. To resolve these difficulties, we proposes WYDIWYG, a 3D form sketching system, that generates a 3D model based on perspective drawing. By literature reviews, we obtained two key findings about how professional designers draw a 3D form. First, they do loose sketches before drawing solid lines. Secend, they first draw a base form, then add details on it. We also found out that they draw the base form using three characterstic curves: center profile, cast shadow, and cross section. Next, we designed and developed a system applying these findings. In our system, the users can draw curves in 3D space in the same way they do in 2D drawing, except they do not need to struggle with messy guide lines. Once they drew characteristic curves which describe a base form, a 3D model of the volume is generated. Then, the users can draw multiple sketches of a 3D form by adding details on the base form at different view. We expect that our system helps designers to do 3D form sketches easier and quicker.
